About me and FAQ's I am based in Ballarat, Victoria, where I teach Vocal Technique and Anatomy at the Ballarat Arts Academy (Federation University) and run a private teaching studio offering individual lessons both in person and online.
I have a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice Performance from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide University.
I'm in my fourteenth year of teaching singing and voice development and have an advanced knowledge of techniques required to sing various musical styles. Drawing on a range of technical approaches, including the hugely beneficial and popular Alexander Technique, I work with my students to discover the power of re-connecting with the body and the breath as a means to opening and freeing the voice.
I have been singing and performing from a young age. Some companies I've performed with include The State Opera of South Australian, Co-Opera, Bedlam Oz, Various People, and The English Chamber Choir.
Frequently Asked Questions. "Do you teach styles other than classical singing?" Yes!
"If I just want to explore my speaking voice and don't want to sing, can I still come for a lesson?" I'd love that. Sometimes when I teach singing, we start by noticing and understanding a person's unique way of speaking. Since we usually speak more than we sing, it's a natural starting point. A large part of what I teach is completely transferable to those wishing to work on their speaking voice.
"I'm a beginner, and I don't know if I can sing. Would you want to work with me?" Absolutely! I love to create a fun and relaxing space so that my beginner students can give singing a try without judgement or expectation. Come and hang out with me for a lesson, and let me support you as you explore the joy of making sound.
"I sing a bit, enjoy it, and would like to see what else my voice can do. Can you help me experiment with my voice?" Yes! Join me online or in my studio and together we will explore your voice and develop a set of tools to help you hone your vocal skills further.
"I've had a lot of lessons and I sing often, do you have the experience to help me further my abilities?" Yes, as a professional singer myself, I know the pressures you can be up against, and the challenges - sometimes exciting and sometimes scary - that can come your way. I will work with you to navigate tricky music and nerve-wracking performance situations. By now you'll know what you want to work on, so let me know what your focus is, or I can work with you to discover anything that's holding you back. Amongst other things, I can help you work on your projection in a safe way, develop your vocal range, vocal agility, regulate your sub-glottal pressure (breath support). I can also coach you on text and performance practice. Most importantly, I can help you maintain a healthy singing technique so that you have the stamina to go and go.
